Their theme of this year’s conference is “Shifting Sands: A Wave of Change?” which will attempt to understand the fast-changing events taking place in the Arab world today.
The conference will run for three days with over 120 students participating from Effat College, Dar Al-Fikr, Indian International School of Jeddah, Bangladesh International School, Jeddah Knowledge International School, Al Falah International School – DPS and Al-Hamraa Girls School.
Three committees have been established, which include a general assembly, human rights council and security council.
In the general assembly, students will be discussing the unrest in several Arab countries.
In the human rights council, students will discuss social media and debate whether it is constructive or a destructive catalyst of change.
In the security council, students will debate the no-fly zone enforced on Libya and whether it shifted the balance of power in favor of the Libyan uprising.
Secretary General of DAHMUN Nadine Mojadidi announced the theme of this year’s conference and made the analogy that recent developments in the Arab world were akin to that of winds shifting sand in the desert, thus changing the entire desert terrain as old dunes suddenly disappear and new ones take form.
Dr. Abdullah Nasseef was the keynote speaker of the evening and mentioned how today’s youth are oriented towards the Western world and that emphasis should be given to an education system with Muslim and Arab foundations. DAHMUN is a simulation of the United Nations.
Dar Al-Hekma Model United Nations (DAHMUN) conference officially opens
