Provincial police chief Gen. Shams-ul Rahman Zahid says the attack began after daybreak Tuesday, targeting checkpoints around a base housing police reserve units located near the provincial capital of Parun.
Zahid says about 400 insurgents are taking part in the attack. He gave no other details on the fighting but says it’s still ongoing.
Mohammed Zareen, a spokesman for the provincial governor, confirmed a large attack was under way but had no details on the number of insurgents involved. He says local residents are assisting the police.
There are few NATO or Afghan soldiers in mountainous Nuristan, near the Pakistan border.
