In his first start since throwing a no-hitter at Toronto on Saturday, Verlander pitched 5 2-3 hitless innings before Cabrera sent a line drive to the gap in the right-center field.
Verlander was trying to equal Cincinnati's Johnny Vander Meer, who threw two straight no-hitters in 1938.
Verlander (4-3) allowed a run on two hits and three walks in eight innings, while striking out seven.
Austin Jackson and Jhonny Peralta hit solo homers for the Tigers.
In Cleveland, Travis Hafner hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning as Cleveland rallied for another dramatic victory and handed Seattle its sixth straight loss.
Tony Sipp (2-0) pitched a perfect 1 1-3 innings for the victory.

Gonzalez hit his fourth homer in three games leading off the fourth inning, and then put the Red Sox ahead 3-2 with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.
The Yankees lost their third straight home game for the first time since last September.
In St. Petersburg, Florida, Jeremy Hellickson threw a four-hitter in his first career complete game and Matt Joyce and Johnny Damon homered as Tampa Bay beat Baltimore.
Hellickson (4-2) struck out three and walked one.
Joyce put the Rays up with a two-run homer off Jeremy Guthrie (1-6) in the second inning. He is 23 for 48 with five homers and 13 RBIs in his last 14 games.
Damon made it 3-0 with a solo homer in the eighth inning.
In Minneapolis, Ricky Romero pitched 8 2-3 innings to lead Toronto to victory over somber Minnesota.
The Twins learned earlier in the day that former star Harmon Killebrew no longer planned to fight his esophageal cancer. Killebrew's No. 3 jersey hung in the dugout, where it will stay for the remainder of the season.
Romero (3-4) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Denard Span hit a single with two outs. He allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked three.
Jose Bautista hit his 12th home run of the season in the eighth. He has reached base in 29 of 30 games this year.
In Arlington, Texas, Alexi Ogando pitched into the seventh inning and Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre homered in Texas' victory over Los Angeles.
Ogando (4-0) allowed one run and five hits in 6 1-3 innings in his eighth career start. Neftali Feliz worked the ninth for his seventh save in seven chances.
Jered Weaver (6-3) has lost his last three starts after winning his first six.
Erick Aybar homered for the Angels.
In Oakland, California, Omar Vizquel had an RBI double during a four-run second inning and Phil Humber pitched well into the seventh as Chicago held off Oakland.
Coco Crisp was caught trying to score the tying run with on a straight steal of home in the eighth inning, sealing the victory for the White Sox.
Humber (3-3) gave up three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. He didn't walk a batter for the first time in seven starts this season.
David DeJesus had two hits for the A's and needs one more to reach 1, 000 for his career.
