“There is no intention of the ministry whatsoever to do this,” said Undersecretary for Cultural Affairs Nasser Al-Hijailan said.
He stressed that Culture and Information Minister Abdul Aziz Khoja has confirmed this right of women to run as well as vote for these positions.
Al-Hijailan, however, admitted without elaborating that there was an idea to make the general assemblies vote on the right of women to contest elections for the boards of directors.
“After carefully studying the new statute for the literary clubs, which the minister recently approved, the ministry was sure that there was nothing to prevent women from contesting the elections of the boards of directors of literary clubs,” he said.
Big cities have literary clubs that offer ministry-approved cultural functions.
