President Benigno Aquino III is the highest Southeast Asian official so far to commend Washington’s security role in the South China Sea. The Philippines and Vietnam have separately accused China of disrupting their oil and gas exploration in the disputed waters.
Aquino said Tuesday that the presence of American forces helps ensure that governments adhere to international law and allow freedom of navigation.
US Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr. earlier said Washington would continue to consult and work with Manila on all issues. Aquino said he was happy with the American diplomat’s assurances.
