Lincolnshire Police say the men died instantly in Wednesday’s blast at an industrial unit on the Broadfield Lane Industrial Estate in Boston, 120 miles (180 kilometers) north of London.
Supt. Keith Owen said investigators had “found chemicals on the premises which tend to indicate either the manufacture or production of alcohol.”
He said police were still trying to identify the five dead men and a sixth who was “very poorly” in a hospital with severe burns.
Earlier this year, authorities seized fake vodka from six stores in the town, which has a large eastern European population.
Customs officials have said the vodka contained chemicals that are often unsafe for public consumption.
