The Defense Ministry said Lo Hsien-che was convicted Monday of espionage and taking bribes. He can appeal.
Lo was recruited by the Chinese as a spy in 2004, when he was a military attache based overseas. He later headed the army command’s communications office, and was believed to have compromised a vital military communications network that uses US technology.
Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. China claims the island its own territory, and both have engaged in espionage against each other.
