Rescue South Africa’s Johnny Smit says wreckage was spotted from a helicopter Tuesday in a mountainous area of steep cliffs near Tzaneen, where the planes left Sunday for a 250-mile (400-kilometer) journey to Johannesburg. Searchers lowered from a helicopter determined the two pilots and 11 passengers — among them two children — had died.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the cause of the twin crash.
Durban Airshow spokesman Ray de Vries says a show organizer was aboard one of the two private planes that were each once military aircraft. De Vries says the group was returning from an air race.
