The college has the capacity to accommodate only 1,000 girl students, and their enrollment procedures were already over. Therefore, there is no way to realize the dream of the remaining 1,800 girls to continue their education.
Some 200 of these graduates gathered in front of the college in their desperate bid to get admission, but to no avail. Now, they are in utter despair. They see no option other than sitting idle at home for the coming several years. They have nothing to do except spending monotonous days confined to their home surroundings. Somebody may ask the question: What prevents them from moving to another city seeking better prospects? But it is difficult for them to do so.
Is there any other city not facing a similar problem? Seats are limited and the number of applicants is very high.
In a nutshell, there is no hope. Also, consider the situation after four or five years. Then, we ask: Is there any job for the women who have graduated from college of education? I don’t think there is.
As far as Hafr Al-Batin is concerned, the city does not have any industry, trade or service sector or any development projects that can accommodate the growing number of jobseekers. In case they move to other cities in pursuit of jobs, they may not find suitable work either, as those cities are already struggling to give jobs to their own residents.
In short, we are paying the price for neglecting remote regions and concentrating on the development of major cities like Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. We have to recollect that the pace of development halted even at these cities for several years during the financial drought of the 1980s.
Above all these, there were people who shut the doors of job opportunities in front of women by giving one excuse or the other. The unemployment rate among our women soared to 28 percent.
What is the solution for this? I can only say that the road ahead is still very long.
