Military spokesman Col. Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos says the armed forces will suspend offensive operations Wednesday against the New People’s Army guerrillas.
The rebels have not responded.
The two sides normally declare cease-fires during the Christmas season. Limited truces are also observed when rebels release captives, but this is the first cease-fire marking the UN peace day.
The UN says the day provides an opportunity for individuals, groups and nations to conduct practical acts for peace every Sept. 21.
Negotiations on ending the 41-year-old communist insurgency stalled in June but are to resume in late October.
