Thousands of Kurds were to stage a protest Sunday near a port in northwestern Turkey from where ferries sail to a prison island where Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan is serving a life term.
The protest was organized to denounce authorities’ allegedly barring lawyers from visiting Ocalan on the island as well as the recent arrest of dozens of Kurdish activists on charges of links to the rebels. Turkey accuses the lawyers of delivering messages to the rebels.
Legislator Aysel Tugluk said police were preventing protesters from reaching the region after authorities declared the protest illegal.
