The sports city is located 3 km north of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and is linked directly with the Madinah Road and Haramain Expressway.
Apart from the stadium, the city will have an independent facility for track and field games, an indoor stadium, a multipurpose hall with a capacity of 10,000 people and parking of 8,000 vehicles.
Speaking to officials in charge of the sports city, Prince Khaled said the designs should consider measures to ensure smooth entry and exit of people.
"It should also consider the ongoing mega projects in the city such as projects for preventing floods, as well as traffic congestion," the governor told Saudi Aramco officials who manage the project.
Prince Khaled also instructed that the design should be based on Islamic architecture since Jeddah being the gateway to the holy city of Makkah.
Towfig Al-Johani, director of the project, said the stadium is designed to host local, regional and international competitions, keeping with FIFA standards. The main building will have six floors.
In a previous statement, Prince Nawaf bin Faisal, head of the Youth Welfare Presidency, said work on the project would start as quickly as possible. "We'll give top priority to this new stadium project," he added.
King Abdullah approved the project in February 2009 when then Jeddah Mayor Adel Fakeih said the new facility would boost sports and youth activities in the Kingdom.
"King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah will be a huge cultural landmark and a symbol of comprehensive development in the Kingdom," said Fakeih, who is now the minister of labor. He added that the sports city would allow the Kingdom to host major Arab and international sports events.
King Abdullah Sports City will be ready by 2014
