Jordan Customs chief Ghaleb Al-Sarayrah says the arms cache
contained 15 pistols, silencers and magazines. He said Monday they were seized
at the northern Jaber border crossing.
He said the weapons were hidden in cans of tomato sauce,
olives and white cheese.
No other details were immediately available, including the
intended recipient of the arms.
Jordan is known as a transit point for smuggled arms and
drugs. In recent years, Jordan has intercepted arms sent from Lebanon by the
militant Hezbollah to Palestinians in the West Bank for attacks against Israel.
Jordan's relations with Syria have long been bumpy. They
worsened after official Jordanian statements rebuking the Syrian regime for
using force to quell anti-government protests.
