Peña completed the marathon last year, less than a month after he and 32 other miners were rescued after being trapped underground for 69 days.
New York Road Runners announced his return to the race Thursday.
The 35-year-old Peña earned the nickname “The Runner” after logging up to six miles each day through the mine tunnels to keep his mind and body sharp.
In New York, he ran, walked and hobbled on a bad knee to the finish line last year. Peña said he would return to the event with proper training.
