The national survey released on Wednesday shows estimated life expectancy is up to between 62 and 64 years for both men and women.
Previous studies estimated life expectancy at between 47 and 50 years.
The study shows infant mortality has been cut in half in recent years and that Afghan women are far more likely to survive pregnancy.
But the survey, conducted by the Afghan Health Ministry in 2010, also says that one Afghan woman still dies about every two hours from pregnancy-related causes and that while childhood mortality is decreasing, it remains the highest in the region.
