But the Ron Kirk, the US Trade Representative, refrained from claiming outright that the measures were illegal under WTO rules.
His comments Friday in Geneva come a day after his Chinese counterpart defended the tariffs, which range from 2 percent to 21.5 percent.
Kirk told The Associated Press that there is still much China could do to comply with WTO rules 10 years after it joined the trade body.
The two countries have clashed recently over tariffs on US chicken imports and Chinese subsidies for wind power equipment.
