Powell is a former high school teacher who joined the US Foreign Service in 1977. She has served widely in South Asia and Africa including as ambassador to Nepal, Ghana and Uganda. Her stint in Pakistan between 2002-2004 came as the US was first seeking Islamabad’s cooperation in fighting Al-Qaeda and the Taleban after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
She currently is director-general of the foreign service and director of human resources at the State Department in Washington.
The Senate must confirm Powell’s appointment.
