Shahul Hameed Mohamadu Abdul Latiff, Pakeer Mohideen Wajurdeen and Kamsa Lebbe Abdul Salam were accused of forging documents intentionally and wilfully for Rizana Nafeek and will stand trial on Jan. 5.
They allegedly sent her abroad to be employed as a housemaid knowing that she was a minor when they prepared her documents. The suspects, appeared before the Colombo High Court on Dec. 12. Judge Sunil Rajapaksa read out the list of charges to the accused. They were remanded in custody until Friday.
A Saudi court sentenced Nafeek to death in June 2007 for killing the baby in her care while her employers were not in the house. She maintains that the newborn choked during bottle-feeding and that she tried to seek help. The Supreme Court in Riyadh on Sept. 25 last year rejected a subsequent appeal by Nafeek.
Nafeek entered the Kingdom aged 17 using documents allegedly forged by her recruiter to work as a maid. She was then assigned nanny duties by the family.
According to Nafeek’s passport, her date of birth is shown as Feb. 2, 1982, while the certified copy of her birth certificate indicates her actual date of birth as Feb. 4, 1988.
