Under the sponsorship of Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, the conference will be held at the Park Hyatt Hotel from Jan. 22-25 with local specialists and experts from 27 countries participating.
The conference, organized by the Saudi Geological Survey Authority, will discuss a number of working papers on the subject with a view to making use of the new ideas and research of participants.
Chairman of the authority Zuhair Nawwab said a number of subcommittees were established to organize the conference, which will consider many studies and research papers on earthquakes and volcanoes.
He said experts would tackle geological risks that follow earthquakes and their impact on construction and basic infrastructure.
"They will also advise on the upgrading of Saudi construction standards in the light of latest information concerning earthquakes and volcanic activity," he added.
Nawwab also said the conference will consider climatic changes that might be the cause of heavy rains and devastating floods in the Kingdom in the past few years.
At the end of their meeting, the participants will visit the location of the historic earthquake in Harrat Rihat in Madinah.
During the conference, three workshops will be held to consider relevant issues.
The conference is held at least once every two years. It has already been held in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman and Yemen.
