Tuukka Rask stopped 30 shots for the Bruins, who played most of the overtime down a man, 4-on-3, after Andrew Ference drew a five-minute major for driving defenseman Ryan McDonagh into the boards and was ejected.
Ference scored his fourth goal of the season and second in two games for the Bruins.
In Detroit, Valtteri Filppula scored in the fourth round of a shootout to give Detroit its 16th straight home victory,
The streak tied Detroit with the 1975-76 Boston Bruins for the fourth-longest run at home in NHL history.
Niklas Kronwall and Nicklas Lidstrom scored for the Red Wings in regulation, and Jimmy Howard made 17 saves. Ryan Russell and Nikita Nikitin scored for Columbus, and Curtis Sanford stopped 29 shots.

In St. Louis, David Backes had two goals and two assists, and Jaroslav Halak made 19 saves to lift St. Louis over Buffalo.
The Blues are 8-0-1 in January, earning 17 of 18 points, and Halak is 11-0-3 in his past 14 starts.
St. Louis is an NHL-best 21-3-3 at home and has 64 points overall, one fewer than Western Conference-leading Detroit.
Buffalo, which dropped its 12th straight on the road and fifth in a row overall, is 2-7-1 in January.
B.J. Crombeen and David Perron also scored for the Blues, and Alex Pietrangelo and T.J. Oshie each added two assists for St. Louis.
In Newark, New Jersey, Scott Hartnell scored two power-play goals, and Wayne Simmonds had a goal and two assists, leading Philadelphia over New Jersey.
The Flyers (28-14-4) remained four points behind the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers. The Devils (26-19-2) lost for the second straight time in the middle of a six-game homestand.
Hartnell scored in the second and third periods. Simmonds assisted on Hartnell’s first goal and on Matt Read’s second-period tally, and then added an empty-netter. Ilya Bryzgalov made 30 saves to earn his 18th win of the season.
In Edmonton, Alberta, Lee Stempniak had a hat trick and added an assist to help Calgary rout Edmonton.
Blake Comeau and Jay Bouwmeester each had a goal and two assists, and Mikael Backlund also scored for Calgary. The Flames are 5-1-1 in their last seven games to improve to 23-20-6.
Andy Sutton and Ryan Smyth scored for Edmonton. The Oilers are 17-26-4. They have with only one win in their last nine games and just five of their last 25 outings.
In Anaheim, California, Jonas Hiller made 31 saves, Corey Perry scored, and Lubomir Visnovsky was credited with a goal that Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson knocked into his own net during Anaheim’s victory.
The Ducks (17-22-7) are 7-0-1 in their last eight and 10-9-3 since Bruce Boudreau took over for fired coach Randy Carlyle on Nov. 30.

In Vancouever, British Columbia, Cody Hodgson scored his second goal of the game with 4:17 left, and Vancouver beat San Jose.

Logan Couture scored a short-handed goal and added a power-play tally, and Dan Boyle also had a goal for the depleted Sharks (26-14-5), who were without top-six forward Martin Havlat (hamstring) and Ryane Clowe (facial injury) and lost their second straight.

In Uniondale, New York, John Tavares scored his second goal of the game 3:58 into overtime, and the New York Islanders beat Carolina for their third straight win.
Tavares scored his 19th goal of the season after extending his career-best point streak to 12 games with a second-period goal. Tavares has eight goals and 13 assists during his streak, the longest in the NHL this season.
Evgeni Nabokov stopped 32 shots for the Islanders (19-21-6), who have won four of five and five of seven. It was also the fourth straight win for Nabokov, a season high for Islanders goalies.
In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Kris Versteeg scored two goals and added an assist for Florida, which snapped an eight-game, road-losing streak with a shootout win over Winnipeg.
Mikael Samuelsson scored the Panthers’ winning goal of the shootout, which used 14 skaters. Mike Santorelli also scored in regulation for Florida (22-15-10), which also ended a four-game skid.
In Nashville, Tennessee, Sergei Kostitsyn, Kevin Klein and Patric Hornqvist each had a goal and an assist to help Nashville beat Chicago.
The Predators have won seven of eight and 10 of 12. Nashville also ended Chicago’s winning streak at three. The Blackhawks had earned points in seven straight games.
Craig Smith and Colin Wilson also scored, and Pekka Rinne made 20 saves for Nashville. Rinne has won seven in a row and 10 of 11.
In Los Angeles, Peter Mueller had the go-ahead goal in the fifth game of his inspirational comeback, Cody McLeod scored on a breakaway and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 25 saves for Colorado.
Los Angeles goalie Jonathan Quick came up short on his 26th birthday after stopping 28 shots. Colorado’s other goal was by Gabriel Landeskog on a power play with 1:57 to play. The Kings have scored fewer than three goals in 20 of Quick’s 21 losses this season, including overtimes and shootouts.
Anze Kopitar scored for Los Angeles. The regulation loss was only the second by the Kings in 16 games since Darryl Sutter replaced Terry Murray as coach (8-2-6).
