Saudi Arabia will call on the international community to apply “all possible pressure” on Damascus to end the violence, said Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal.
Hundreds of Syrians have been killed since the observers began their work in late December and political opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad are demanding the Arab League refer the crisis to the UN Security Council.
“My country will withdraw its monitors because the Syrian government did not execute any of the elements of the Arab resolution plan,” Prince Saud told Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo.
“We are calling on the international community to bear its responsibility, and that includes our brothers in Islamic states and our friends in Russia, China, Europe and the US,” the prince said, calling for “all possible pressure” to push Syria to adhere to the Arab peace plan.
Meanwhile, the observer’s mission has been extended for another month, officials from the 22-member organization said on Sunday. The officials said the UN would train the observers. In another development, rebels seized parts of the town of Douma on Saturday and then withdrew to their hideouts, activists said.
