The Desert Coastal Aquaculture showed a movie to take the PEG members to an interesting journey into the world of prawns, fish and sea cucumbers.
NPC is a privately-owned company on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia which is the largest, fully integrated prawn farms in the world. Located 150 kms south of Jeddah at the port town of Al Lith, they produce 18,000 MT a year of white prawns for sale in Kingdom and around the world.
NPC is helping to found the Saudi Aquaculture Society (SAS), which with other local aquaculture businesses, will help to promote aquaculture as a viable, dynamic industry as part of Kingdom’s economic diversification and food security strategies. NPC project covers 250 sq. kms of desert and 75 kms of coastline consisting of 550 giant-sized ponds of 10 hectares each. The company is planning to replicate its project in Mauritania, having just signed a MOU with the Islamic Development Bank for this purpose and in other developing countries.
The presentation, which was largely attended by the members of PEG and their families, was followed by dinner. NPC had donated prawns that were specially served in the dinner after the program.
