Bangladeshis mark global day to celebrate mother tongue

The envoy was speaking at a function organized by the Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh to observe the “Amar Ekushey” — the Language Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day on its premises on Tuesday.A large crowd of members from the community as well as students from the Bangladesh International School in the capital took part in the event.Paying rich tributes to the martyrs who made supreme sacrifices for the recognition of Bangla as the country's mother tongue, the envoy said the community remembered the valiant freedom fighters with respect and dignity.He told his countrymen to renew their commitment and reinforce concerted efforts to contribute to the socioeconomic development of Bangladesh. The ambassador urged his compatriots to work unitedly to improve the image of Bangladesh in the Kingdom. He called upon all, especially those with their families here, to teach their children Bangla.The day’s program included a recitation from the Holy Qur’an, ceremonial hoisting of the national flag at half mast by the ambassador, and reading out the messages of the country's president, prime minister and foreign minister, followed by a discussion meeting, cultural programs and distribution of prizes.A cultural program that included singing of “Ekusher gaan” and recitation of poems by Bangladeshis living and working here was also held. The embassy also organized essay, drawing and poetry competitions among students of Bangladesh International School.At the end of the ceremony, the ambassador distributed prizes among the winners of the contests. It ended with a recitation of a Munajat seeking salvation of the Muslim Ummah, invoking the blessings of Allah for continuous peace, progress and prosperity in Bangladesh.On Wednesday, the Bangladesh International School (English section) in Riyadh observed the day with a special assembly in its boys' and girls’ sections separately. School Principal Mohamed Hussein and Mohammed Qamarul Islam, chairman of the board of management, took part in the events.The students recited devotional songs to pay homage to the country's freedom fighters. Hussein said the function was held with a somber note in appreciation of the contribution of the martyrs to make Bangla the nation’s mother tongue.
