Tabuk Gov. Prince Fahd bin Sultan attended the ceremony held at Al-Daqam beach resort in Amlaj late Sunday. The governor honored 30 fishermen who were chosen for the prize in recognition of outstanding track record in their profession.
A large number of fishermen from the Red Sea coastal regions of Amlaj, Al-Wajh and Dhuba participated in the event. Prince Fahd bin Sultan arrived in Amlaj as part of his current inspection tour of various regions of Tabuk province during which he launched several development projects worth over SR6 billion.
Addressing the gathering, the governor said that the prize was instituted this year with the objective of promoting fish farming and fishing as a noble traditional profession for the citizens in the coastal regions. “People usually earn their livelihood through sweat and toil. Here I see several old fishermen participating in this event and I hope that their children and grand children will continue this profession to earn their livelihood,” he said.
Referring to education and training in fishing, he said: “We have established a fisheries company in Al-Mowaileh, and more than 70 percent of its employees are Saudis. The company will implement a number of training programs on fishing, and will undertake activities aimed at encouraging more young Saudis to take up this profession,” he said.
Several officials of the region, including Amlaj Gov. Muhammad Al-Raqeeb, Amlaj Municipal Chairman Muhammad Al-Atawi, and Chairman of the Prize Committee Wasil Al-Harbi attended the ceremony in which Ameen Abubakar, head of the fishermen’s group in Amlaj region, welcomed the governor. Prince Fahd bin Sultan also watched various cultural activities and folk performances staged by fishermen. There was a spectacular show in which several fishing boats took part, and fishermen sang their traditional songs. The governor gave away certificates and prizes to the winners.
He honored the chiefs of fishermen from the regions of Amlaj, Al-Wajh and Dhuba. The governor also toured an exhibition organized on the sidelines of the function.
