“The Saudi electronic media space is open without restrictions and journalists deal with many sensitive issues with courage,” it said.
In a statement issued on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, which falls on May 3 every year, the association said the Saudi press has made rapid strides during the past years, in terms of content, technical structure and professionalism.
“We don’t claim the Saudi press enjoyed total freedom in the initial stage or during its development stage. However, we can say that Saudi journalists enjoy considerable freedom in dealing with all issues,” the association said.
“Saudi Arabia participates in this important international event that aims at deepening the basic principles of press freedom, defending journalists and media persons and removing the obstacles that stand in the way of their mission,” he said.
“The global celebration of press freedom is also marked to appreciate the role of journalists and their sacrifices and highlight the dangers they face while carrying out their duties,” the statement said.
Speaking about the Saudi press, SJA said it has been playing a significant role in the country’s social, cultural and intellectual development.
The Saudi press has been a forum for expressing different opinions and deepening a culture of dialogue, the statement said. “It is a model for modern media and the freedom enjoyed by Saudi journalists is equal to most civilized countries,” it added.
The association emphasized its efforts to strengthen press freedom and protect journalists in the country. “We also call for developing rules and laws that regulate media profession. We also make efforts to improve the work environment of journalists,” it said.
