This is with reference to the article “Is a N. African security bloc in the making?” (June 3) by Linda Heard. I fully agree with the writer that economic stability is better than democracy. So-called activists don’t seem to understand the ground realities. Their approach is too idealistic for countries in turmoil. I fail to understand why people insist so much on the implementation of a western-style democracy. Before calling for such a system, they should take into consideration the socioeconomic differences.
In addition to that values, customs and traditions also play important roles. We cannot blindly follow the western model of democracy in our part of the world.
