Prince Jelawi bin Abdulaziz was appointed Wednesday as the new
governor of the Najran Region with the rank of minister. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah issued the Royal Decree relieving Prince Jelawi from the position of deputy governor of the Eastern Region before his appointment to the governorate.
Najran is one of the most southerly provinces of Saudi Arabia and shares a border with Yemen.
The former governor Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah became Makkah governor in December 2013 after four years as governor of Najran.
Najran has more than a million people with an area equal to that of the US state of Pennsylvania, which is 46,000 sq. miles. In August 2014, a report claimed that a Saudi-French archaeological team has unearthed in Najran what might be considered the oldest inscription in the Arabic alphabet.
