Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, has donated 10,000 square meters of land to people with disabilities, for the construction of sports and recreation facilities.
The prince made the offer to celebrate the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is held every year on Dec. 3.
At an event organized here by the King Abdullah Center for the Disabled, Prince Sultan bin Nasser bin Abdul Aziz, the honorary president of the center, said the land was donated in honor of the Saudi national intellectual disability football team.
The Saudi team won the world intellectual disability tournament for the third consecutive time earlier this year by beating South Africa 4-2 in the final. The event is held every four years. Saudi Arabia won the tournament in Germany in 2006 and South Africa in 2010.
During the ceremony, Prince Sultan gave the Saudi champions a check for SR500,000 for winning the world tournament three times. Businessman and international film producer Ibrahim Dashishah sponsored the award for creativity, which was awarded for the first time.
Prince Sultan thanked the country’s leadership and various charities for instituting development programs and supporting efforts to integrate people with disabilities into the community.
He praised businesspeople for finding innovative ways to help the disabled, and not only donating money to rehabilitation centers. “There are around 150,000 people with disabilities in Jeddah. Only 7,000 of them benefit from 27 training and rehabilitation centers,” he said.
