JEDDAH: President of the Human Rights Association Mufleh Al-Qahtani praised the role of the Kingdom in supporting the Burmese community, which is estimated at 250,000 people, while the United Nations described the Saudi role as leading activities to support this community in humanitarian, social, educational and health aspects, and provide job opportunities for them.
"The Kingdom presented a leading humanitarian model by late Crown Prince Naif and adopted by Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal. The Kingdom confirmed its leading role through a similar correction of Yemeni residents' situations. Human Rights Association stresses the importance of Saudi efforts to raise humanitarian issues at local, regional and international levels," he told a local newspaper.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) had described the experience of the Kingdom with the Burmese community as a model which can be applied in other countries.
The acting regional representative of UNHCR in Gulf countries, Nabil Othman, thanked the Kingdom for taking these steps to support this community without paying attention to race or color.
