Why this hullabaloo over closure of porn sites in India? (“India orders clampdown on porn sites sparking debate,” July 4)
I commend the Indian government for having ordered over 800 porn sites blocked for “objectionable” content, and which I am surprised to learn has ignited a debate about freedom of speech referring the country as the world’s biggest democracy.
The action is praiseworthy. We may condemn the present government of Narendra Modi as being too radical for the minorities, but there is no denying the fact that certain issues mainly related to human values are something which is common to all the communities.
Will Muslims ever support continuation of such porn sites, which is detrimental to the moral health of their own children and women? I remember in its previous tenure, BJP had banned the vulgar dialogues in movies.
There is nothing new in the anger voiced on social media about ‘moral policing’ by the state and so-called ‘freedom of speech.’
But some time we have to be strong and show them the right way if they fail to abide by the common concerns of social values.
At the same time, I would like to draw the government’s attention to the persisting problem of prostitution that has not been controlled and the number of women in red light areas keeps increasing by every passing year.
Also, while we very rightly tend to block all such objectionable images that tend to harm the sensibilities of a cultured Indian family, why we keep promoting equally objectionable erotic sculptures of Khajuraho temples in the name of Hindu culture. I am sorry I find even Shiva linga quite offending.
These double standard by the ruling party apart, I welcome the bold step that the government has taken by blocking the sites, which should be appreciated by all. — Rafique Islam, Muscat
