ALKHOBAR: Smart surveillance systems and cameras on the King Fahd Causeway have been activated to improve traffic safety on all roads leading into Bahrain and reduce the number of traffic accidents, said Osama Al-Bahr at the General Directorate of Traffic in Bahrain.
Al-Bahr said that fixed and mobile cameras are used on the causeway, explaining that violations registered against GCC citizens are delivered by officers, except those relating to Emirati citizens. Those violations are electronically sent because of the existing electronic connection between the two countries.
He said that smart traffic surveillance systems would be fitted on most streets and roads in Bahrain, confirming that the authorities are seeking to reduce the number of traffic irregularities and accidents, especially in light of the high mortality rate in Bahrain which is curretnly 82-86 deaths per year due to traffic accidents.
Along similar lines, Al-Bahr said that there were security and military patrols equipped with four-lens cameras to monitor traffic and errant behavior on the streets and intersections in Bahrain.
He said the smart devices had proved their effectiveness and ability to achieve the desired objectives during the trial period, and would monitor speed irregularities, excesses, traffic rule violations, in addition to mobile phone-related violations.
The Bahraini General Directorate of Traffic recently launched a comprehensive awareness campaign to raise awareness of the seriousness of committing traffic offenses, the official said.
Meanwhile, fixed surveillance cameras, Saher, were installed by the King Fahd Causeway Authority (KFCA) and the Eastern Province Traffic Directorate on the King Fahd Causeway five months ago to monitor traffic in both directions and crackdown on cars exceeding a speed of 100kph.
