JEDDAH: The alleged Twitter account of a Saudi girl, who ran away from her family to Georgia while on vacation in Turkey, continues to send threats on behalf of the girl demanding that her family stop pursuing her and withdraw the police report on her escape.
Meanwhile, two lawyers filed criminal accusations, confirming she will be held legally liable because of the cybercrimes she committed when she published her father’s photo, and directed threats of extortion through social media.
The runaway girl, who captured the interest of Saudis, attracted further attention when foreign activists internationalized her case, accusing her family of torturing her. She took advantage of the travel and tourism opportunity to escape to Georgia, hiding behind a false name to express her demands.
The girl held her family responsible for her behavior which was described as reckless. She now faces a number of criminal charges, according to specialists, and will be charged under the law.
Lawyer and legal adviser Sultan Al-Mukhlifi told a local newspaper that the majority of countries that apply the principle of legal personality in criminal law have the right to prosecute and punish their citizens in accordance with their own criminal law systems, whether they reside on national territory or abroad.
“This regulatory procedure applies to many criminal cases in the world, and in the case of the runaway girl, this is a crime represented by theft, extortion and threats of harm, adding to the damages inflicted to the reputation of the family. All this represents a stark violation of the Anti-Cybercrimes Law, and therefore she will be prosecuted,” explained the lawyer.
Legal counselor and member of an international arbitration body Mohammad Al-Wahaibi said the return of the girl is a legal must because she is still a minor in accordance with the international regulations, as she is not yet 21 years old.
“We have to consider the age of the girl and that she was on vacation outside the Kingdom. It is evident that she is irrational and in a most dangerous age phase. But the most important thing is the hidden dark side, which is the existence of an instigator. How did a girl this age retain a lawyer, and why did she run to Georgia and not an Arab state?” he asked.
Al Wahaibi demanded that the competent authorities hold accountable whoever encouraged this action, and supported it on social media.
