RIYADH: As part of its social welfare program, the Ministry of Labor and Social Development organized educational excursions for orphans who are under its care.
In its first phase of the program, the ministry focused on the orphans who are housed in the Western Province, where the orphans were taken on a cruise in Corniche beach in Jeddah, visit to the National Museum, Red Sea Mall and to a bowling event.
An official from the ministry pointed out that the event was part of the ministry's keenness in not only looking after them but also give them a variety of theoretical and practical experience to enable them to become useful citizens in the society.
The ministry is the biggest helper of orphans in Saudi Arabia, providing accommodation and financial support, besides offering educational and awareness programs.
The ministry has reportedly struck deals with several institutes across the Kingdom to provide educational and training courses for orphans to enhance their skills and qualifications.
The institutes provide courses in English, computers, communication skills, in addition to awareness programs on dangers related to smoking and drug addiction, sexual abuse, hygiene and religious matters.
Hayat H., an institute supervisor, said the institute, in cooperation with the ministry, tries its best to provide education and awareness programs using experts and qualified staff in a bid to discover their abilities and to handle different circumstances in the real world.
Early this year, Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal patronized the Arab Orphan Day which was organized by the ministry in the region.
The Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs of the Arab League also expressed support for the project.
Participants included various associations and charitable groups involved in the protection and welfare of orphans in the region.
Abdullah bin Ahmed Al-Tawi, director general of the ministry’s branch in Jeddah region, expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the governor for sponsoring the event.
“The sponsorship will have a lasting and positive effect on the children who are longing for the affection of parents,” he said.
He added that the governor’s visit brought joy to the orphans. Prince Khaled has always supported social, charitable and educational projects in the region.
He noted that there were two projects for orphans in the region’s villages being set up in Makkah and Jeddah which are proof of the Saudi leadership’s concern for the orphans and will go a long way in making them realize that the Kingdom’s leadership cares about them.
On the occasion, the different groups and associations involved in charitable projects presented a series of events and activities to celebrate the event.
These were in addition to cultural, social, educational programs and sports activities prepared for orphans in Jeddah, Taif and Makkah and other provinces in the region.
