Citizens left in the lurch as housing project delayed

JEDDAH: A housing project in Jeddah that was supposed to have been completed within two years is yet to be launched even as 18 months have passed.
Worse still, the applicants have been kept in the dark about its fate as the agencies concerned reportedly refuse to provide clear information to them.
An official source at the Ministry of Housing told local media that the project has been handed over to developers, who have not yet started work citing reasons such as infrastructure planning, location of the project and delayed financial allocations. The ministry, in 2015, announced the launch of the project for 4,200 apartments north of Jeddah’s airport, and invited applicants to see the area.
It had then announced that all housing projects in the future would be transferred to real estate developers in the private sector. The ministry had set two years for completion of the housing projects in Jeddah, but it has been over 18 months and it is still in the infrastructure stages due the ministry procedures, the report said.
The Jeddah housing project (1) is located north of the Jeddah airport, next to the new King Abdullah Stadium (Al-Jawhara), with an area of 1,999,999 square meters, and is designed and planned to provide 4,200 housing units. The project is expected to accommodate 23,331 people.
