RIYADH: Picking up a tip from social media reports, the police arrested a man who had stolen a number air conditioners from mosques in Riyadh.
Fawaz Al-Maiman, Riyadh police spokesman, said that police took a tip from video footage posted on the social media where a man was seen removing an air conditioner from a mosque.
Al-Maiman said the suspect was a Saudi national in his 30s and he was caught while driving his pickup laden with stolen air conditioners.
During police interrogation, the suspect confessed that he had stolen the air conditioners from mosques, as well as from homes.
The spokesman said that the suspected thief will be produced before a court on completion of their inquiry.
There are plans to install CCTV cameras in all mosques but they have yet to be implemented.
An Arab News reader once reported that his mother was accosted in an empty mosque when she went in to pray. Four beggars, wearing abayas, followed her in, and she swore that they were men.
They asked her for money, but she told them she had none and she ran out. “If there were security cameras in place I don’t think such things would happen,” he said.
