JEDDAH: The Jeddah Criminal Court has sentenced two students of a secondary school here to 10 days in prison, and ordered that they be flogged in front of other students for assaulting the deputy headmaster of the institution.
Mazen Al-Sindi, the judge of the juvenile section of the court, also ruled that the students be suspended from school for a year, as it was proven beyond doubt that they verbally abused, physically attacked and injured the deputy headmaster, who had caught them cheating during the exams.
The incident was recorded on school cameras. The students were rounded up by the police and referred to the Board of Investigation and Public Prosecution.
The judge ruled that one student will get 70 lashes while the other 40 during the morning assembly on the first day of school.
Both the students will have to apologize publicly and also give in writing that they will not misbehave with or harm the deputy headmaster in any way again.
The judge said attacking teachers or staff and verbally abusing them is a major humiliation.
“Such incidents are alarming and would lead to a careless and irresponsible generation. Moreover, a Muslim must respect his teacher,” he said.
According to reports, reconciliation efforts were made but the teacher insisted that the students be tried so that the teaching profession could reclaim its standing in society.
