JEDDAH: The Jeddah Municipality has removed 46 food stalls and vendors from the streets in various parts of the city during an ongoing drive against unlicensed businesses.
Hassan Ghunaim, head of the university area sub-municipality, said the drive will continue until all unlicensed street vendors and stalls are removed from the streets.
Thirteen carts and vehicles loaded with dates and fruits were confiscated at Abdullah Suliman Street, near the Binlandin mosque, in Wazirira and new University area, he said.
“The inspections are being conducted in different neighborhoods with an aim to remove illegal street vendors and protect consumers from unhealthy food. They also create traffic congestion,” said Ghunaim.
The municipality also seized 270 cartons of dates and fruits which were given to charitable organizations in the city, he said.
During an operation, the municipality seized 60 cars among other toys and also closed a warehouse where rotten and expired foodstuff was stored. The owner of the warehouse and vendors have been fined according to the rules and regulations.
Irregularities can be reported to the municipality by dialing 940 or lodging complaints with the secretariat through social networking sites.
