Mahir Ali’s article “Waiting for a Syrian miracle, (Sept. 13) is short on clarity and details.
There is no mention about the Syrian conflict that has caused huge loss of lives — about half-a-million. Syria is burning in sectarian flames; Bashar Assad’s government is getting help from Iran, Iraq, Hezbollah and Russia.
This group controls vast oil resources and other mineral deposits, investing huge money. Russia is interested to have cooperation of these countries to crush the Sunni uprising in the Russian region. China too is silently helping this group.
On the other side, there are Syrian freedom fighters who are getting little foreign help. The Syrian freedom fighters are facing terror from every side as Muslim states fear popular uprising in their states seeking freedom and democracy.
The UN should call all the warring factions at the negotiating table and make them all agree on a provisional government to take control of Syria. An immediate cease-fire then could be observed by the UN peacekeeping force. — Mazhar Uddin, By e-mail
