Beginning of a new era

The Turkish presidential and parliamentary elections remained one of the most searched topics on Google on Monday in Saudi Arabia.

The pattern indicated people’s interest in the political developments in Turkey, which is a key Muslim country. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan once again emerged as a popular political figure in the country and gained sweeping new powers after being declared the winner of the dual votes. With this election, Turkey has switched to a presidential system.

Erdogan first served as the president of Turkey in 2014. Prior to that, he served as the prime minister from 2003 to 2014. He also served as the mayor of Istanbul from 1994 to 1998.

The Arabic hashtag “Saudi Arabia vs. Egypt” remained the most trending one on Twitter on Monday, as the two sides faced each other in a World Cup match.

To support the Green Falcons, Saudi low-cost airline Flyadeal tweeted a photo symbolically showing popular dishes from both nations — Egyptian Kushari and Saudi Kabsa — with a caption in Arabic that said: “If you like Kabsa, show us a green heart emoji in the comments.”

This tweet opened the floodgates and social media users responded in their own way.
