I read with interest the article “Iran nukes: Obama is on a losing wicket” (Nov.11) by Linda Heard. It is useless to comment on the policies of US President Barack Obama. His Middle East policies have only aggravated the situation in the region. Obama’s inaction over Syria led to the rise of the self-ascribed Islamic State. Washington’s support to Al-Maliki’s administration in Iraq has divided not only the country but also the entire region along sectarian lines. Reports about Obama’s letters to Iranian supreme leader has left his Gulf allies astonished. It seems that the United States is least bothered about regional stability. Despite Iran’s ugly role in the current chaos, the United States wants to involve it in the fight against the Islamic State. Such a move will further polarize the region.

Iran’s direct involvement in the fight against IS will backlash. Many Sunni Arab tribes in Iraq and Syria will never accept Tehran’s involvement due to its support to Shiite militias, Assad and Al-Maliki.

The US is likely to make a huge mistake. I hope the policymakers in Washington realize the situation and the consequences of a possible US-Iran détente.
