This is in response to the article “Can elections be solution to Pakistan’s problems” by Nadeem M. Qureshi. While I cannot speak for others, I do not share his views. He is right only to the extent that the nation has suffered a lot in the hands of the present democratic rulers. We have braved these sufferings with a lot of patience, however, since we consider these to be the growing pains of the democratic process that we must endure before seeing the fruits of the process.
We have done so in the hope that, if the present democratic process is not interrupted by any self-proclaimed savior, whether popping up locally or imposed from outside by powers with vested interests, it will eventually bring positive dividends to the nation, even if only by degrees.
Efforts certainly appear to be afoot in Pakistan from some quarters, as Qureshi notes, including the recent import into the country of a self-styled benefactor from Canada, but the public in Pakistan has grown considerably in maturity, and this time around, they will not welcome any move ultra-vires of the constitution that tries to derail the present democratic process, and in fact will resist any such effort. — M.
