RIYADH: Riyadh police disclosed recently the arrest of young men in Ramadan for performing dangerous drifts in the early morning fasting hours.

According to Col. Fawaz Al-Maiman, a combined force carried out the arrests at rest houses in Al-Salli district after receiving information from members of the public.

The spokesman said the youngsters were seen also eating during the day in Ramadan and listening to loud music. They used vehicles without plates.

He said the police arrested 37 people who were handed over to the concerned authorities for prosecution. The cars had also been under surveillance by the police and their owners have been told to appear at various police stations.

“The Riyadh police monitor risky behavior, not only during Ramadan but also during the whole year,” he said.

“We call on parents to keep a watch on their children and ensure they know where their children are,” he said, and urged young people to respect the sanctity of the holy month and be faithful to Almighty Allah by keeping away from such dangerous stunts.

According to a report, 646 people involved in drifting were arrested this year. Tens of Saudi youth have died as a result of drifting and this has prompted the authorities to criminalize both those involved and those attending the events which are announced by young people on social media.

Shoura Council members have also discussed the problem which endangers the lives of not only those who drive but also those who attend such shows.
