Teenagers raised by positive parents exhibited lower rates of depression and performed better in academics and extracurricular activities, says Ismail Maritheri, an English lecturer at King Abdulaziz University quoting a recent study.

“Parents and teachers should look for their children’s strengths and capabilities and give them enough freedom with clear cut rules,” said Maritheri in his lecture address on effective parenting at the International Indian School, Jeddah.

Maritheri, who is a trainer and counselor, advised parents to set out a time plan for their children after consulting them. During the interactive program attended by class x students and their parents, he answered questions on various issues.

He enlightened parents on issues that concern them regarding their teenagers.

“Parents should be warm, supportive and encouraging while being firm, consistent and clear with limits and boundaries. They should spend time with their wards, which is essential for the all-round development of the child.”

S.P. Sing, a former member of the IISJ managing committee and president of the Indian Youth Welfare Association, emphasized the importance of positive parenting. “We have to interact with children, understand their problems and motivate them by giving them our support,” he said.

Today’s children face so many distractions because of the prevalence of social media platforms, computers and cellphones, which impact their studies, Sing said. “During the time of exams children face huge pressure to get high grades and compete with other students; at this stressful period we should support them and understand their capabilities. Parents should also help children build confidence.

The program started with a welcome speech by Noufal, headmaster of IX-XII Block. Principal Syed Masood Ahmed stressed the need for parents to be active in their children’s education.

Farhana Khan of the English department highlighted the importance of learning spoken English and developing communication skills.

Mohammed Feroz Iqbal Kidwai and Binu Meethale of the social science department, Biju and Mohammed Anees of the science department and Farhathullah Khan and Mohammed Ibrahim of the mathematics department spoke about activities in their departments.

Noufal also explained CCE activities, dates of examination and scores for grading. There was a similar program for Class IX students and their parents. Students were happy about the program. “Effective meeting don’t happen by accident. It happens by design,” said one while praising the organizers.
