JEDDAH: The authorities concerned have started installing 112 surveillance cameras on the northern sea front of the Corniche to keep an eye on trouble makers, an online newspaper has said.

The initiative has come following a recent incident of harassment of two Jeddah girls on the Corniche which triggered a public debate through the social media.

A video clip of the harassment was posted on social media, triggering a public outrage. Many citizens questioned the behavior of the youths who harassed the girls and a number of citizens seeking a tough law against the crime.

The girls also drew criticism after a video clip posted on social media showed them allegedly provoking the youths. The incident happened a day after Eid Al-Fitr in the morning and the area was a bit isolated.

A number of suspects have been arrested and handed over to the public prosecution department.

The suspects, who have been taken into custody for 15 days, is being investigated. If the involvement of these youths in the case is proved, the two girls would be required to appear before the public prosecution.
