DAMMAM: Traffic regulations in the Kingdom and many countries of the world dedicate the right lane of highways and roads to trucks as they are designed to carry heavy weights in contrast to the other lanes, which are allocated for lighter weight vehicles.

Most highways in the Kingdom suffer from traffic violations, inflicting dangerous wear and tear on an already struggling part of the road infrastructure, as the right lanes of highways often erode frequently, causing truck drivers to use other lanes, thus leading to fast deterioration.

In addition, some trucks arriving from other Gulf and Arab countries are known to violate traffic rules in the Kingdom, moving between lanes, which attests to the absence of control on the movement of these trucks by authorities, thus adding stress to the different lanes. Whilst there are serious penalties for such actions in other Gulf countries, there are no such penalties in the Kingdom.

According to international studies, road damage that can be caused by one 18-wheeler truck is equivalent to that of 9,600 cars. The study used a fully loaded tractor trailer at 80,000 pounds, and a typical passenger car at 4,000 pounds for the investigation.
