JEDDAH: Meat and poultry topped the list of food items seized by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) at the border crossings for violating the health standards in the last two months.
Approximately 267,137 kg of unfit meat and poultry were rejected, according to figures provided by SFDA to local media. The authority rejected 198 imported food shipments weighing 851 tons and accounting for a total of 0.11 percent of the cleared cargo, which was approximately 41,882 loads, weighing 772,778 tons.
Vegetables and canned fruit came second on the list of violating food stuffs seized by the SFDA’s inspectors with 253,478 kg, followed by fish and seafood 22,4476 kg, rice 213,667 kg. The other food items seized for violations were fresh fruits 15,334 kg, coffee and tea 14,4337 kg, milk products 63,198 kg, whole grain 51,834 kg, beverages 50,826 kg and processed meat 48,595 kg.
