My Diabetes Story, an online network exclusively for diabetics in the Middle East, has rapidly grown to over 1,000 members since its launch in November last year. Led by ambassadors from across the region, the network is providing a platform for patients to actively engage in discussions related to living with diabetes, as well as sharing advice and life experiences.
“The community offers a private space where members can openly consult, support and guide each other. After all, managing diabetes plays an important role in a person’s lifestyle and by sharing stories, members can help others who are faced with the same situation,” said Dr. Abdulrahman Alsheekh, consultant endocrinologist at King Abdul Aziz University and Soliman Fakeeh Hospital and head of the Saudi Scientific Diabetes Society.
“The online community is also valuable to medical professionals, as they understand the importance of a support network to complement patients’ treatment and therapy. Our roles often involve providing emotional guidance as much as medical advice to help them overcome challenges,” Alsheekh said.
The My Diabetes Story community, sponsored by Saudi Scientific Diabetes and Sanofi, aims to provide meaningful support and advice through patient-to-patient communication. Leading diabetes associations across the Middle East support the community.
Douaa Saif Aldeen, a Saudi member of My Diabetes Story, has lived with the disease since she was 15. She engages with members of the network daily to discuss various issues related to diabetics.
“Through this community I intend to help my fellow members to share their journey with diabetes,” she said.
Community members come from various countries across the region, and are predominantly type 2 diabetics.
“Patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes often need support when they are suddenly forced to make lifestyle changes, and are constantly in search of information and practical advice. We care about the individuals who live with diabetes and are continuously seeking ways to support them by providing added value beyond medication and therapies,” said Salah Mousa, general manager at Sanofi Saudi Arabia. “We encourage diabetics to join this private community. It has become a growing network of inspiring and helpful individuals who are always available to offer insight and recommendations.”
