Seven Saudis and one Kuwaiti were arrested after 1 million narcotic tablets were seized from them by a security patrol.

The tablets were concealed in a Ford, said a spokesman for the General Directorate for Drug Control.

Authorities received information about the smuggling attempt and subsequently assigned a security team to investigate.

One of the individuals initially resisted arrest by firing from a machine gun and stabbing a security official on the hand with a knife, but was overpowered and arrested, the spokesman said.

“The security team managed to zero in on to the arrival of the smuggled goods and raided the individuals involved just as they began to remove the smuggled goods from the vehicle,” he said, adding that the amphetamine tablets were concealed in different parts of the vehicle.

Another 92,000 tablets and SR295,000 were also seized from the home of one of the individuals arrested, bringing the total number of tablets seized to 1.15 million.

Authorities are in the process of referring them to judicial authorities.
