Hajar Al-Oqaily, a Saudi student on a scholarship to study for a first university degree, was awarded a prize by Queensland University of Technology for developing a portable device to be used by the visually impaired.
The device can do immediate translation of texts to Braille. The blind can use the device any time and anywhere for help in his or her studies and even in the simplest daily routines. The device was shown during an exhibition organized by the College of Creative Industries at the university. Al-Oqaily’s project won the prize out of 60 competing projects.
Al-Oqaily got a congratulatory letter from the Saudi Ministry of Higher Education.
Dr. Abdul Aziz Abdullah, the Saudi cultural attaché in Australia, commended the achievement and said his office would support distinguished students.
