This refers to the Fadia Jiffry’s report, “Rise in poultry prices forces many to opt for eating out.” Till few years back people used to get fresh chicken in all parts of the Kingdom in any quantity. There used to be hundreds and thousands of shops in each city where the fresh chicken was always available.
The fresh chicken would come to these shops every day from hundreds of poultry farms in each city. Now, we are forced to use the extra expensive chilled, frozen chickens coming from a very few farms of the Kingdom or are imported from other countries. The poultry business too has suffered. Just imagine how many people were engaged in this business at that time, earning livelihood by providing cheap, fresh and tasty chicken!
Where have those local poultry farms gone from all the cities of Saudi Arabia? The Kingdom now relies on the expensive, low quality imported chicken; and the people have to buy expensive but frozen and chilled and hence tasteless chicken. — Aziz Ahmad Khan, Riyadh
